The Pomodoro Technique for Fidgety Kids

Updated: Aug 21

Do you have a child who just can not sit still? I do. Whenever it's time to do any work, she fidgets, releases the lid on her train of thought, and drops her pencil over and over and over again. It can be enough to make me pull my hair out. Enter the timer.

Timers are not just tools for managing tasks; they can boost focus, productivity, and confidence. For children, timers help break tasks into manageable chunks, making assignments less daunting and more achievable.

The benefits of timers extend to us adults, too. We've all been distracted by our social media feeds or a random chatty phone call when trying to get work done. Timers can help us to stay on track with our work or tasks just as much as they help our kids. Setting a timer for focused work sessions—often referred to as the Pomodoro Technique—helps in maintaining concentration while preventing burnout. It's a simple yet effective way to enhance efficiency and manage time effectively.

Just as children need breaks between learning sessions to recharge their minds and bodies, adults also require periodic breaks to maintain optimal performance. Breaks are not just moments of rest; they are essential for mental and physical well-being. Stepping away from work or responsibilities allows everyone to decompress, reduce stress, and return to tasks with renewed energy and clarity. Whether it's a short walk, a brief meditation session, or simply stepping outside for fresh air, breaks are invaluable for sustaining productivity and creativity throughout the day, and it's something you can do together.

Microschools like Lucas Literacy Lab makes this possible for students every day. Our children can take breaks as needed to help with their productivity, focus, and overall mental health.

Children instinctively understand the importance of play in their development. It's how they learn, explore, and grow. As adults, the concept of play often gets overshadowed by the demands of adulthood, and sometimes, we take that away from our children a little too early. At Lucas Literacy Lab, we follow the children's curiosities and natural interests to help ground our lessons and maintain the joy of learning.

Incorporating timers and breaks into our daily lives isn't just about managing time; it's about prioritizing our well-being and nurturing a healthy relationship with productivity. Just as we recognize the importance of these practices for adult productivity, children, too, can reap significant benefits from adopting a structured approach to work and downtime. By honoring the need for periodic breaks and setting boundaries with time management, we empower ourselves to work smarter, live happier, and thrive in all aspects of life.

So, the next time you feel overwhelmed by your fidgety child, remember to embrace the power of timers and cherish breaks as essential moments of rejuvenation. By doing so, you'll not only enhance your productivity but also cultivate a more balanced and fulfilling life for the whole family.

Join us for a Zoom info session with our microschool founder, Amanda Lucas, this Thursday at 6:30 PM.
