Left Back for Lack of Documentation

Updated: Aug 21

New Jersey is known for its supportive homeschooling laws. Unlike some states, NJ imposes no specific curriculum, testing, or reporting requirements, giving families considerable autonomy in how they approach education at home. But that doesn't mean we don't need the documents.

When my then 16-year-old daughter was transitioning back into public school from homeschooling, her NJ high school asked if we had any of the typical documents required by more restrictive states like New York, where we were moving from. Thankfully, we had her transcript, quarterly reports, and benchmark assessments because her school administrators divulged that many homeschoolers are made to repeat grades for lack of documentation. Had we not had paperwork proving the grades she'd completed, she would have been denied a spot in 11th grade and put back into 9th.

When I shared this with some proponents of alternative schooling, they believed that we'd win the fight against the school if it had come to that. According to them, the school would eventually have to take our word for it and place our daughter in 11th grade without the documents to prove the courses she'd completed. But I'm not in the business of creating obstacles for my children. At Lucas Literacy Lab, we keep records. Here’s why:

  1. Educational Progress: Detailed records help us track your child's academic achievements and milestones.

  2. Proof of Learning: Should your child need to transition to another educational setting, these records can provide evidence of their academic progress and accomplishments.

  3. Personalized Support: Keeping detailed records allows us to tailor our educational approach to meet your child's evolving needs and interests

Our commitment extends beyond providing a high-quality education; it's about building a partnership with families. We are here to offer guidance, resources, and expertise to ensure that your child's educational journey is not only enriching but also prepares them for future endeavors.

Choosing alternative schooling in New Jersey is a decision rooted in the desire to provide your child with a personalized and nurturing educational experience. Rest assured, we are dedicated to maintaining comprehensive records and portfolios that document your child's academic progress and facilitate any transitions smoothly. We are committed to supporting you every step of the way.

Join us for a roundtable discussion, where we will delve into the Charlotte Mason pedagogical approach and share stories, insights, and aspirations for our children’s education.
